So you’ve never taken a CPR course and want to know some basics to help someone in need. CPR is a relatively easy skill to perform, with just a few basic steps.
First Step: Make sure they need help. You can do this by “shake and shout,” tap the person’s shoulder and shout “are you ok?” If they don’t respond then:
Step Two: Look for signs of life. Do you see or feel their chest rising and falling with breathing? If they are breathing, they are alive and we only need to call 911 and be ready for them to stop breathing. If they are not breathing and show no signs of life (no movement, etc.) then:
Step Three: Direct someone specific to call 911 and get an AED if one is available. “You, call 911.” “You, go get an AED and bring it back here.”
Step Four: Place your hands on the lower part of the breastbone, just below where the nipple-line should be. Push hard and fast, to the tune of “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees.
And that’s it! CPR can really be that easy. Learn more on AHA’s “Hands-Only CPR” website.
